I have a regular sit up high on the seat hand cycle. It's ok then a chance to try a lean and turn but was real tippy tough to get back to center. Along came a Lighting by God I thought I died an went to heaven. It sure surpassed anything I have tried.

You should feature cruiser tires more. Most areas are crushed stone trails and a wider tire would be great for us trail riders.

Are you committed to the "lean to steer" design only? There are a significant number of users who don't have the balance necessary to use this design. Can we expect to see a pivot design someday?

Just wanted to pass on that anyone that buys or rides a Topend hand cycle I am sorry as I have never gotten the skin ripped off my leg so quickly as I did when I rode one of these heaps of junk. Hey Top end remember that to legs don't bend and if they do something is wrong. And one other comment is that Freedom ryder needs to remember to do something with the seat as it is too hard for any handicap person with no butt muscles! Lightning keep up the great work! The Freedom Rider killed my low back and when i turned on the Top End the front wheel hit my legs. My Lightning is by far the best. Thank you so much for such a tremendous product. L.R.Q.

In May of this year I rode the new lightning at the Abilities Expo, in Anaheim and found it very much improved. I got an excellent price from Dr. Franks and traded my old one in on a shiny, yellow bike. I love it!

It's 80 percent more stable than the original one they've fixed things like the flag holder and brakes (a bigger one) and have also put new tensioners on it, which improve the handling greatly. I don't race but do ride almost daily and would highly recomment the bike to anyone. It is greatly improved from its predecessor and a joy to ride!

Hi!

First of all I would like to thank you for the fantastic introductory price offer you have sent me a few months ago. Unfortunately, two reasons have complicated the purchase. First of all, my cardiologist is not convinced that I can get involved in riding a handcycle here in my place (we have lots of hills around here, and no plain surfaces to ride) I have a transplanted heart, and she (my cardiologist) would like to perform a few exercise tests more before issuing me a green light. Second, the evolution of the european currency has been a complete disaster in the last few months, so the dollar is hitting record values every other day, eating completely your offer in no time (it's now more expensive for me to buy a handcycle with your offer, than what it was last year without the offer)

But anyway, I don't want to complain any more. I want to thank you again for all your help with this issue. In the meantime, as I wait for my doctor's permission to ride, and as I wait for the dollar to get a bit cheaper, I would like to send you the address of a company in Spain that is working hard on a new pedalling system that they claim to be a 16% more effective than the traditional one (a figure that does REALLY make a difference). The first prototypes have been tested in mountain bike races with high success, and with a lot of proffessional road cycle teams interested in it (ONCE, etc), they are just waiting for homologation from the International Cycling Union to participate in events such as the Tour of France. I just thought that you may be interested in the system, that is already in the market for non competitive use.

Their address is:

http://www.ran.es/personal/rotorbike/default.htm or http://www.rotorbike.com

Please, note that I am not in any way conected to the Rotor company. I am sending you this message for informative purposes only.

Sincerely,

Just Got my bike, had the brakes shifter and stearing fine tuned at the local bike shop. ( I highly recommend that unless you know lots more than I do about bikes! ) The guys at the bike shop where real impressed with the bike. I was able to get a standard trainer to work with it ( as long as I removed the foot-rests and added a metal spacer fir the gap between the roller and the tire, the trainer is more geared to a mountain bike tire.) The bike worked as I hade expected (and needed) it to. I have C.P so the leg and back position were important to me because of stiffness in the legs. I love the 27 speeds! Great bike.

Hi John,

I like the new changes in the site. I had two Freedom Ryders prior to buying my Lightning. I toured plenty of miles on a heavy bike before swearing never to ride one again and selling both of the old beasts. Since then i have enjoyed touring across America with the GTE BIg Ride and earninga spot on Team USA preparing for the Paralympics in Sydney. None of that would be possible without my Lightning. It's just one year old and it has 9,000 miles on it!!

Hello Jon,

Thanks for designing the Lightning Handcycle,it's by far the best built bike of its type that I have seen. The bike has given me the oppertunity to ride in cycling events that only my family and friend were capable of riding. The bike is a year old this October and 1,200 miles later, we will be celebrating with a 2 day MS150 charity ride from Newport Beach to Mission Bay San Diego.

8/21/98 Thanks Dr. Franks, for the assistance you just gave me over the phone. Also, thanks for the info you sent in the mail.

As I had mentioned during our call, I'm new to handcycling and still shopping. I tried out an Action Top End Excelerator XLT and although I liked the price and good looks of the bike, I had some real problems with it: 1- With the front fork steering, legs just get in the way! You just can't turn the front wheel very far before the bike is trying to bend your legs the wrong direction. 2- Also with front fork steering, while turning, you loose efficiency and power as you pedal. One arm is needing to reach longer to pedal ond the other arm has a shorter pedaling stroke. I didn't get a chance to climb any hills with the bike but would imagine that pedaling problem would be compounded. 3- I'm not sure on this one but I believe the center of gravity is a little farther back than on the Lightning (and possibly others). I was concerned about front wheel slippage on loose surfaces.

I'm still in the decision mode but the your Lightning is on the "A" list.

Hi! my name is Leland, I have CP and have owned a freedom ryder for the past 4 years. I used to have a racing chair that I used for exercise and races but found that due to the constant motion and spazms that occur in my legs it was uncomfortable to sit with my legs in an almost kneeling position. With the freedom ryder i'm able to put my legs in a more relaxed position which helps lessen the overall spasticity of my body, but I still find its seating setup very poor because it forces my legs to be positioned almost at a 90 degree angle to my torso. Last summer I had a chance to try out one of your handcycles at a water ski clinic in Columbus OH., I was very impressed with its reponsivness and handling, but the thing that I enjoyed the most was its seating position, the angled back, adjustable sling, and slightly bent leg positioning gave it a much more smoother and enjoyable ride than that of the freedom ryder. I recently read in a issue of sports n spokes that you were offering sponserships of your bikes, would you please e-mail me at the below address and let me know the details of this program.

Thanks

After buying and using a freedom ryder over the summer of 98, i have decided to get a lighting because of the back pain I have experinced with the FR. After 25 miles, my back is fried. The only advantage I had with the FR is that i could stuff it in the trunk of my car. While in the process of buying a SUV, The lighting will fit nicely in the back, and will not have deal with any more back pain.

I'm a c-7/t-1 quad. I've tried the Freedom Ryder and had a lot of trouble with the seating position. It seems that the Lightning's recumbent position might solve this problem. I'm still shopping, but so far this appears to be the best fit for me. I have also looked at your video, in which you discuss your ability to customize the bike, especially the seat height. I'm very interested in learning more about this. I've emailed a couple of times with no response, but I'll keep trying. Your machine looks like a real quality design. Thanks.

Dr. Franks, Great site, but where do I get prices? I have no idea if your bikes are even in my price range. I am 100% disabled and love to get out some. However the VA will not assist as they believe that it would actuallly cause the back to be worsened with the exercised the crank action causes. I used to have a clamp on, but when I needed a larger chair, that had to be turned in to the VA. Thus I have to purchase this item on my own. As for such lofty goals as the Paralympics, well I am 56, can not fly do to air pressure, but I do want to compete in the Wheelchair games. Thanks for listening. E-mail at r_norgaard@hotmail.com

If you're going to buy, it's important to have price information upfront in order to determine whether or not you want to spend additional time investigating the product.

This bike is awesome, I bought the Lightning because of the expertise Lightning has with building recumbants. I knew the experience would be transferred to the handcycle. I recently moved to a significantly hillier part of NJ, if I had the additional weight of some of the other handcycles out there, my job would be a lot tougher.

I am considering setting up my lightning for the county wide path system in Northern NJ called Patriots Path. The path system has a variety of surfaces but is primarily fine aggregate and dirt. Do you have any recommendations for wheel / tire combinations for 'off roading' the lightning? I think a skid plate to protect the swivel joint underneath might be a good idea too for going off road. Also, do you have any solutions minimizing carpal tunnel symptoms? (other than surgery...) ie squishy handles? I do use the gel filled biking gloves. Thx, Tim tripley@compuserve.com

Comments

I am very impressed with your trike. I do not use a wheel-chair and therefore would be interested in a two-wheeled handcycle. Do you make a two-wheeled handcycle? The HandBike seems heavy and not so aggressive as your style.

Comments

AT first 'blush', I think it is an excellent -project-!! Emotionally, physically, mental and possibly in the future, moneytarily.

Comments

Can't say what I think about the bike in detail as I havn't tried one. I met Dr Jon in Yreka, Minneapolis and Leicester. I met Tim at US HPV races, Laupen and Lelystadt. You may have seen my bike on the Handcycling Times web site. I'm interested in the Lightning as many races don't allow Kevin to ride the 2 wheeler. The site is fun - I guess Stonehenge is a montage as I don't think they would allow the bike that near.

Good day to you all. Your Lightning Handcycle appears to be a dynamite product, if all the hype on your website is to be believed. Sorry for the cynicism, but I've been burned before on products for the disabled.

I must give you credit though. Your website is one of the most well designed and attractive sites that I have visited. Very well done!

My reasons for inquiring about the Lightning are simple. Although I am 52 and a double amputee, I am NOT DEAD !!! My competitve juices still flow with a passion and I can think of no better way of competing than cycling. I would love to try out a Lightning to whip this 'old' body back into good enough shape to become competitive in cycling events. There could and would probably be other non-competitive events that I would participate in as well, such as some of the events that raise money for charity.

And wouldn't it be a feather in all of our caps if I could be competitive enough to actually compete and maybe even win a handcycling competition on a Lightning?

I am 21 years old and I was born with a disability called Cerbal Palsy, which effects the lower part of my body. Because of this I have to ride with a seatbelt attached to my saddle to keep from falling off my horse. I started riding in Playdays in 1995 then In 1998 I got a chance to ride in the Lone Star Junior Rodeo riding in Pole Bending. I have been riding in local shows for the past three years.

The reason I am writing this letter is because I am trying to find Sponsorship for the 2003 season in the local and Class A and World shows. But in order for me to do so I will need help. The Sponsorship is where you can help. I would greatly appreciate any sponsorship you could give and will put your name or business in my pamphlet and on my horse trailer, we also sponsor a class so the announcers at the show will advertise your business.

Below are the awards that I have won the last three years High point Western pleasure (2 years) Walk; trot Highpoint Championship (last year) Presidents Award BeltBuckel (last year)

Jon,

I called you last Wednesday telling you I had no bike to ride due to the defective "A" frame you sent me last October. You said you'd send a reinforced one out ASAP as I am unable to ride my bike. Haven't received it so far so I implore you to send it out soonest so I can resume riding. John Gilson, 2700 East Valley Parkway, #88, Escondido, Ca. 92027

Dear respectful one

I feel good contacting you today I got your contact from a woman friend, working in a big company here in Abidjan, knowing quite well that this contact will bring a lasting relationship. I am Mrs Grace Williams of mende tribe in sierra-Leone, my husband until his death was the king of our tribe and also one of the richest diamond and gold dealer In Sierra-Leone .

On the 19th may 2000.My husband was murdered by the rebel forces on the accusation that he is a great sponsor and in support to restore the democratically elected president of Alhadji Tejan Kabba .Almost half of the palace was burnt .My husband junior brother who is in support of the rebel forces took over control of the leadership by force .Fortunately I was not in the place when they raided the palace .My husband married four wives with 11 children. two of the wives, with my children including my mother were murdered in cold blood while my two younger brothers escape the incident until this moment where the remaining families are I dont know their way about whether they are alive or not.

Right now I am left alone with only child and a younger sister. since the sudden assassination of my husband the family has been displaced and totally disorganised. on the extensive search on the place I discovered the documents covering the deposit my husband made in security company .He deposited a trunk box containing US$ 18.5 million Dollars .As my town has been a serious war zone, I made arrangements with ECOMOG peace keeping force to help me move out the remaining family out the country . However we moved out of sierra-Leone successfully with these documents , certificates, of deposit and receipt of payment , in other words my husband did not disclose to the security company the real contents of box.

Now I wish to transfer these funds abroad and enter into a business venture as the country (COTE DIVOIRE) is no longer in peace since they conducted their presidential election on the 22nd October 2000 the country has witness all sorts of political unrest ranging from ethnic clash which resulted to killing of innocent citizen and strangers. People are living in fears as the country is no longer that peaceful nation as it was before due to this reason that I have decided to contact you, to assist me to lift out and transfer this money consignment out of this country .please I need your assistance. From :morrison jack Tel: 225 07 62 45 09 ABIDJAN COTE D OVOIRE WEST AFRICA

Permit me to inform you of my desire of going into business relationship with you. I got your name and contact from the Ivorian chambers of commerce and industry. I prayed over it and selected your contact among other contacts I got from there.

I am Mr morrison jack the only son of late Mr and Mrs FRANCIS jack. My father was a very wealthy cocoa merchant in Abidjan, the economic capital of Ivory Coast, my father was poisoned to death by his business associates on one of their outings on a business trip.

My mother died when I was a baby and since then my father took me so special. Before the death of my father on SEPT 2000 in a private hospital here in Abidjan he secretly called me on his bed side and told me that he has the sum of Eight Million, five hundred thousand united states dollars. (US$8,500.000) left in fixed/ suspense account in one of the prime bank here in Abidjan, that he used my name as his only son for the next of kin in depositing of the fund. he also explained to me that it was because of this wealth that he was poisoned by his business associates. That I should seek for a foreign partner in any country of my choice where I will transfer this money and use it for investment purpose such as real estate management, hotel management and shares.

Sir, I am honourably seeking your assistance in the following ways. (1) To provide a bank account into which this money would be transferred to (2) To serve as a guardian of this fund since I am only 31 years. (3) To make arrangement for me to come over to your country to further my education and to secure a resident permit in your country.

Moreover sir, I am willing to offer you a good percentage from the total sum as compensation for your effort/input after the successful transfer of this fund into your nominated account overseas.

Furthermore, you will indicate your option towards assisting me as I believe that this transaction would be concluded within fourteen (14 days) you signify your interest to assist me.

Anticipating to hear from you soon.

Best regards

morrison jack

After 5 years of stuggling with an injury that has now turned into a permanent diability, I found the answer to by exercising dilema --- Lighting Handcycle. I tried several other bikes on the market and the fit was not right and they were uncomfortable. I've only had my bike for three days, but I have ridden 50 miles and it is great. It is different from my mountain bike racing days but this is a cahnce to let the wind blow in my hair and get a good workout. I'm even thinking of getting into racing. Thank you for making a bike that is comfortable, customizable and affordable. Melynda Baker-Schnee

Hello,My name is Samantha and I just read about your bike in the O.I. news letter.I have a 7 year old daughter who has osteogenesis imperfecta. She not only has O.I. but she also has a dream.Herdream is to ride a bike. She watches all the neighborhood on bikes.Big ones small ones new ones used ones. She really gets depressed when her 8 year old brother rides down the sidewalk without her.I have bought many push toys to siton.Butothing seems to be as cool as a bike. She has had over 200 fractures 26" tall and 26 pounds. She can sit up well. And scoots to get around in the house.IShe uses a power chair to get around outdoors and in school.I had her wheelchair put to the full speed because she wants to keep up with her friends on bikes. After reading "Potential Benefactor to Provide Free Lighting Handcycles to Childern with OI Aged 17 and under."I believe I have found her dream and want to take this opportunity to make that dream come true. Please help my Tiffany. sincerly,Samantha Register

I love my handcycle, and ride as often as I can.

I did have an accident this past weekend, a roll-over on a curve downhill. I am convinced that the accident would have been prevented if the rear wheels were cambered. Any plans to alter the design?

Hi Dr. Franks, I'm very interested in the Lightning and look forward to more information. It's been 12 years since I was Dx with Multiple Scelrosis. My condition is very low grade remittant-relapse. I have limited use of my legs. As a past swimmer, triathlete, and coach I'm in need of competition and now is the time. I have a Masters in Phys. Education and fully understand what it takes. But the equipment is what I need. I look forward to your response and assistance in my new established goals. Thanks! BLC

Whoever wrote the following Comment below in quotes :

"Just Got my bike, had the brakes shifter and stearing fine tuned at the local bike shop. Great bike."

I am also working on getting my own handcycle from Top End. I also have CP like the person who wrote the above and I am having the exact same problem with the way the footrest are attached to the front wheel. I read that in your comment you are able to have the foot rests removed and to another location/another type of foot rest designed for you. If you/or anyone has any ideas of a different foot rests placement (Not attached to the axle)

Leg and Back postition are important to me as well.

Please contact me at the following e-mail address : burleytj@htl.net Thank you, Respond ASAP Greatly Appreciated! Tabetha
